Louis J. Gale & Son Inc., a family-owned grain handling and feed mixing business in the dairy country around Waterville, NY (315-841-8410), started drying grain for its customers when it installed its first grain dryer in the mid-1970s.

That dryer, one of two at the elevator, served the company well but was worn out by 2006.

For a replacement dryer, General Manager Edward Gale says he relied on the recommendation of his dryer service contractor to selected a Delux DPX-12T Series continuous flow dryer rated at approximately 1,440bph at five points of removal. The series is manufactured and sold by Delux Mfg. Co., Kearney, NE (800-658-3240).

“We didn’t have a lot of space and couldn’t exceed the footprint the old dryer occupied,” Gale says. “The new dryer gets its capacity from added height.”

Gale also was sold on the dryer’s fuel efficiency, with a large chamber to recapture warm air coming off the grain and blending it with incoming ambient air.

The dryer was installed in mid-September 2006. At the end of November, Gale had gotten three days of work out of it, as heavy rains all season reduced the size of the local corn crop.
